Coffee Consumption

Daily consumption of coffee beverages remained consistent in 2009 with 54 percent of the overall adult population partaking, according to the National Coffee Association’s annual survey. Consumption by coffee drinkers aged 18-24 stabilized following declines in 2007 over 2006 and continued to trend higher in 2008. Young adults who drank coffee consumed an average of 3.2 cups per day as compared with 3.1 in 2007, a significant increase over 2005's level of 2.5 cups per day. Americans purchase 65 billion cups of coffee every year of which 75 percent is brewed at home.

Coffee preparation at home is up 5 percentage points with 83 percent of past-day coffee drinkers reporting that they made coffee at home the day before, according to NCA. Green Mountain Coffee certainly benefitted from the latter trend, selling 1.2 million Keurig single-cup brewers during the first two quarters of 2009. Orders for K-Cup refills topped 432 million last quarter. The firm has enjoyed 25 quarters of consecutive double-digit growth. Green Mountain’s revenue rose 46 percent last fiscal year to $500 million.
